FCDP Statement on Valley Historian Involvement in 1776 Commission
012521-FCDCC-Press-Release
As California’s first Latino Senator, I’m ready to keep on fighting for the people of California.
I am honored to serve as California’s next United States Senator. There’s a lot of work to be done and it’s going to take a lot of resources to make progress on the issues that are important. So before I ask for your support, let me explain a little bit about myself.
I’m the proud son of Mexican immigrants. I learned everything I know about work and opportunity from my parents. My father worked his way up from a dishwasher to head cook at a local diner with only an elementary school education, and my mother worked tirelessly as a housekeeper for affluent families.
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and worked hard as a kid. I found refuge in books and baseball and eventually earned admission to MIT. And with all of this opportunity, I’ve fought every day to make life better for California families.
I got my start as a young activist, organizing my neighbors against crime and environmental racism. I was elected the youngest LA City Council President where I delivered after school programs to communities that had none. As a State Senator, I passed bills to fight climate change, expand educational opportunity and demand gun safety. And as California’s Secretary of State I stood up to Donald Trump’s attacks on immigrants and voting rights.
Now, as California’s first Latino Senator, I’m ready to keep on fighting for the people of California. Every Californian deserves to share the dream my parents believed in, and the best way we can do that now is by passing a bold, progressive agenda. That includes:
This is just the start of what I hope we can achieve together and I’m ready to get to work. But in order to be successful, I need your help. We have just a few days left until our first fundraising deadline of the new year. And with time running out, I have to ask:

There’s so much to do, but I know we can do it together, with our families and our communities by our side. That’s how I’ve made progress since I was a kid, and I know that’s how we’ll continue to make progress as a state and as a nation.
Thank you for your support and stay tuned for more about what’s next, we are going to need you with us.
Onward together,
Alex Padilla

It’s time to do the right thing.
Immigration reform is urgent and a matter of life or death for people fleeing violence or persecution.
Immigrants needlessly suffered under Donald Trump. It’s time to right those wrongs. That’s why I stand with President Biden in his work to roll back the dangerous executive actions of the Trump administration and build a better future that guarantees that undocumented essential workers and their families are included in our nation’s economic recovery.
We must find permanent protections for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living, working, and contributing to our country. We must keep essential workers safe and recognize their role in keeping us safe through the pandemic. And Joe Biden’s plan will do just that.
We have deemed so many of undocumented workers as essential, and we have an obligation to treat them as essential. They deserve not just COVID and labor protections but the security of a path to citizenship.
PERIOD.
Like so many families, mine came to this country for a better life, more opportunities, and safer communities. They made sacrifices because they believed in securing the American dream for their son — now it’s time to move that torch forward and ensure that every Californian has a shot at achieving their own American dream. It’s time to deliver on that promise by prioritizing immigration reform and protection for undocumented essential workers.
I’m committed to working with President Biden on a permanent solution that fulfills the promise of our country — but I need you by my side to get it done. Add your name to join the fight to pass immigration reform once and for all.
Thanks,
Alex Padilla

While it’s important to celebrate our victories, it’s equally important to remember that the work continues.

Today, we make history — and I’m so honored to be part of it.
Today we’re swearing in not only Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — the first female, Black, and South Asian vice president — but Georgia’s first Black senator in Rev. Raphael Warnock, the youngest senator since Joe Biden in Jon Ossoff, and me, the first Latino senator to serve the state of California.
These past few years, we’ve made so much ugly history — that’s why it’s so overwhelming to be part of a day like today, to bring hope and optimism back to the history books and back to Washington, D.C. I’m beyond honored, and I’m focused — the work starts today.

I’m the proud son of immigrants. My parents met as immigrants from Mexico — they fell in love, got married, and applied for green cards, ready to embrace a country that valued hard work and opportunity.
That’s something they instilled in me, from my father working his way up from a dishwasher to head cook at a local diner with only an elementary school education (he liked to boast that his kitchen “never failed an inspection”), to my mother working tirelessly as a housekeeper for affluent families.
That’s something I’ll carry with me every day as California’s next senator — to keep on fighting, to keep on building on that opportunity. I still live less than five miles from the home I grew up in, and I’m still fighting for the same progress I was as an upstart teenager in Pacoima.
There’s so much to do, there’s so much to achieve — but I know we can do it together, with our families and our communities by our side. That’s how I’ve made progress since I was a kid, and I know that’s how we’ll make progress as a state and as a nation.
Thanks,
Alex Padilla
