When I was sworn into the Senate, I found myself in the middle of one of the most consequential moments in our nation’s history: Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial.

But my fight began four years earlier, when Donald Trump originated his Big Lie by attacking the integrity of California’s elections. As California’s Chief Election Officer, I fought tirelessly against the disinformation and attacks on our elections that ultimately led to the violent and deadly insurrection in our nation’s Capitol on January 6th.

Now our path forward is clear: There can be no progress without accountability.

No one, including Donald Trump, is above the law. And there can be no hope for unity for our country moving forward without accountability now.

And yet, some of my Republican colleagues believe we should simply forget about this terrible day and simply move on. But actions must have consequences and the only way to prevent this kind of attack on our democracy again is by holding those responsible accountable.

I pray that the United States Senate stands on the right side of history at this moment. I think we can get there, and your support would go a long way.

The second Senate impeachment trial for Donald Trump began today and marked an unprecedented historical moment in our nation’s history.

Just over a month ago, Donald Trump incited a violent insurrection to try and prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.

However, this isn’t the first time Trump has tried to undermine the American people’s confidence in our electoral system. Trump began calling into question the legitimacy of California’s elections in 2016.

And as California’s Secretary of State, Alex fought back against Trump’s lies and set the record straight to defend the right to vote for millions of Californians. Now as California’s Senator, Alex is finishing the job by prosecuting Trump in the Senate.

It is finally time to hold Trump accountable and while he may no longer be in office, we cannot establish the precedent that a president in their last weeks in office can seek to prevent the peaceful transition of power. We can never allow this abuse of power to happen again.

And while this impeachment trial is of the utmost importance to moving our nation forward, we are still in the midst of a deadly pandemic.

That’s why we must pass pandemic relief that is greatly needed in communities across the country, while also holding Trump accountable and ensuring another threat to our democracy like this never happens again.
