OAKLAND, Calif. (May 16, 2017): Kimberly Ellis is proud to announce the endorsement of Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, the first statewide officer to weigh in on endorsements since early last year.

In an issued statement, Newsom lauded Ellis and her leadership abilities. “I’ve watched the race closely and believe that Kimberly has demonstrated she has what it takes to do the job at a critical time in our history. She’s shown an outstanding ability to organize, energize the grassroots and advance reform in our Party. I’ve known Kimberly for years and have especially been impressed with the way she grew Emerge California. She’s built a track record of supporting, training, and inspiring Democratic women to run for office.”

“I’m so incredibly proud to have the Lieutenant Governor’s endorsement. We’ve shown that the Central Committee and ADem delegates believe in our vision. The natural question has always been will our elected officials also support our shared vision for a new path forward,” said Ellis. “The Lieutenant Governor has once again demonstrated bold leadership, answered that question for us and joins other key leaders like Assistant Majority Leader Bonta, State Senator Mitchell and Congresswoman Speier.”

While the Trump administration and the Republican Congress are trying to outdo each other with their voter suppression strategies, we’re working diligently in California to empower young people to use their voices and VOTE as soon as they’re eligible.

As your Secretary of State, I have the privilege of traveling the state and visiting as many schools as I can along the way. At each stop, I partner with local groups to promote civic education and voter registration. In fact, state law designates the last two weeks of April and September as High School Voter Education Weeks.

This spring, the hot topic was online pre-registration.

Online pre-registration, made possible through legislation authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson in 2014, will help more young people vote as soon as they are eligible. Whether they’re at school, at home, or hanging out with friends, young Californians who are eligible can pre-register to vote on their smartphone, tablet or laptop. It’s quick and easy.

Getting young people involved early makes them informed and engaged citizens and much more likely to be consistent voters in the years ahead.

Here are a few highlights from my recent high school visits:

Sylmar High School (Sylmar, CA): LA Times: In California, teens can now register in advance to be voters – LA Times

John W. North High School (Riverside, CA): Press Enterprise: Secretary of state urges Riverside teens to register to vote

Hueneme High School (Oxnard, CA): Ventura County Star News: Voting is on the agenda of secretary of state’s Hueneme visit

Linden High School (Linden, CA): Stockton Record: Secretary of state takes youth voter drive to Linden

“Yolo County proudly stands behind Kimberly Ellis. She is truly an exceptional leader and we have every confidence that she is exactly what the California Democratic Party needs right now. With Kimberly, you know she puts people before politics and that she has the ability to build our party in a bigger, better, bolder way,” said Marlene Bell, Vice Chair of Yolo County Democratic Central Committee. “Kimberly understands the value of grassroots organizing and the importance of engaging every Californian. Her knowledge as an organizer will help not just here in California, but nationally as well as we look to take the Senate and House.”
