PROGRESSIVE, LABOR CHAMPION ENDORSES ED HERNANDEZ FOR LT. GOVERNOR
United States Representative Jimmy Gomez Back Senator Ed Hernandez in Statewide Contest
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Expanding his wide-ranging list of support, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez landed a crucial endorsement from United States Congress Member Jimmy Gomez in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor.
A past Political Director at AFSCME UNAC/UHCP, Gomez previously served in the California State Assembly before being elected to the United States House of Representatives. In making public his backing of Senator Hernandez, Congress Member Gomez released the following statement:
“Senator Ed Hernandez has proven himself as a champion for working families. He’s backed healthcare for all, raised California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, equal pay and supported tough environmental protections. I know he will make an extraordinary Lt. Governor and I’m proud to endorse him.”
Recently, State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez rolled out a new digital video ad, titled “Proven Progressive,” in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor. The ad highlights some of the Senator’s high-powered endorsements, including from the California Nurses Association and the California Teachers Association, along with his 100% legislative voting scorecard from organizations like the California Labor Federation* and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California Advocates*.

Significantly, recently California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ groundbreaking drug transparency bill, SB-17, into law. Senator Hernandez’ latest digital video ad, titled, “Life or Death,” features a moving testimonial from Kendall Renee, who is allergic to more than 95% of foods and carries at least four EpiPens with her at all times. Renee highlights Senator Hernandez’ efforts to combat skyrocketing drug costs in the ad.
A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities. As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.
Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.
Because of his work in the California Senate fighting for Workers rights, Immigrant Rights, Medicare For All and a $15 minimum wage, the California Nurses Association and the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) California have both endorsed Kevin for Senate!
This is good news for Californians everywhere looking for a progressive champion to take California values to Washington, DC.
The LA Times agrees, writing that “the endorsement gives de León a burst of momentum in the lead-up to the California Democratic Party’s convention next week.”
Michael, we’ve got a big financial gap to close in this Senate race, but we want to do it the right way: with thousands of Californians contributing what they can afford in grassroots donations to fuel our scrappy campaign.
“At a time when 15 million Californians still have no health coverage, or pay for premiums and still can’t afford to get the medical care they need, Kevin de León demonstrated outstanding political courage and leadership in shepherding passage of SB 562 in the California Senate.”
—Malinda Markowitz, RN, co-president of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United
“Kevin de León is a leader who speaks up for California values. His leadership on the most pressing challenges facing California stands in stark contrast with the dysfunctional political establishment in Washington, D.C.”
—David Huerta, SEIU California executive board member
Today, healthcare advocate and Sanger City Councilmember Melissa Hurtado announced her campaign for State Senate District 14.
Hurtado, who is currently the only woman serving on the Sanger City Council, has spent her career fighting for greater access to quality healthcare, education and high paying jobs. As a healthcare advocate, Hurtado fought to protect Medicare and Medi-Cal while increasing access to quality healthcare for all Californians.
“I am excited to announce my candidacy for State Senate,” said Hurtado. “On the Sanger City Council, I’ve seen the critical need for true leadership for our region, which is one of the most underserved areas in California. That’s why I’m running for State Senate: to fight for access to quality healthcare and education, stand up for working men and women and create good paying jobs for the Valley.”
Hurtado begins her campaign with several key endorsements, with Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno), Sanger Mayor Frank Gonzalez, Arvin Mayor Jose Gurrola, Wasco Mayor pro Tem Alex Garcia, and Farmersville Councilmember Gregorio Gomez throwing their early support behind Hurtado.
The Primary election for SD 14 will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.
California National Organization for Women (NOW) PAC endorses Dave Jones for Attorney General
Jones’ record of leadership on a wide range of women’s rights and social justice issues makes him our choice to be California’s next AG.
The California National Organization for Woman (NOW) PAC announced its endorsement today of Dave Jones for Attorney General.
“Dave Jones has a decades long history of fighting to improve the lives of women and girls. Jones is a champion for fair pay, reproductive justice, LGBT rights, violence prevention and gender and racial equality. Dave Jones has taken on insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals systems on behalf of consumers and won in court over and over again.
Dave Jones isn’t afraid to take on powerful special interest groups to fight for the rights of those who often feel powerless. Dave Jones has spent the last seven years leading a statewide consumer protection and law enforcement agency. With Dave Jones, we will have an Attorney General with the experience to defeat the Trump Administration in court and the courage to fight here at home for criminal justice reform, single payer health care, and against the corporate greed that perpetuates income inequality,” explained Kolieka Seigle, President of California NOW.
“I am proud to have the endorsement of the California National Organization for Women,” said Dave Jones, candidate for Attorney General. ” I look forward to continuing to work with NOW’s leaders to make further progress as we pursue gender and racial equality and social justice.”
I want to share why I’m supporting Eleni Kounalakis for Lt. Governor. I hope you will join me and vote for her at the CA Democratic Party Convention.
I have seen Eleni in action. She’s tenacious, hardworking, and never stops fighting for what is right.
Because of her work as a diplomat, a Commissioner for First 5, and a businesswoman helping families own affordable homes, she has earned the support of Senator Kamala Harris, Equality California, CA Federation of Teachers, EMILY’s List, John Burton, and other distinguished Democratic leaders.
I am proud to endorse Eleni – because I know she will strengthen California’s economy so it works for everyone.
Eleni is a businesswoman, but not a Wall Streeter. She is beholden to no one but hardworking families and the people of California. She is not afraid to take on big corporate interests, like Wall Street, Big Oil, and Big Pharma.
P.S. Join me, Eleni, and other extraordinary candidates at the “Celebrating Women Who Dare to Run” hospitality suite on Friday, February 23 – RSVP here!
