The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

It’s time to make sure that every single person in this country gets the coverage they need at a price that they can afford.

Nine years ago today, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law.

And for the past nine years, Republicans have done everything they can to try to tear it down.

They couldn’t get the votes to repeal it outright. But they’ve chipped away at it, sabotaged it from inside the Trump administration, given giant health insurance companies more wiggle room to leave tricks and traps for people in the fine print, and denied their own constituents live-saving health coverage by refusing to expand Medicaid.

Today, Republicans are still trying to strangle the Affordable Care Act in lawsuits and roll back health coverage for tens of millions of Americans.

But Democrats are ready to fight back even harder. We’ll protect the Affordable Care Act — and we’ll make sure everyone gets high-quality, affordable health care with Medicare for All.

That’s because health care is a basic human right, and we fight for basic human rights.

Let’s make sure everyone is covered. Let’s make sure nobody goes broke because of a medical bill. No more fighting with insurance companies.

This is a goal worth fighting for, and I’m in this fight all the way. Add your name if you agree that health care is a basic human right.

As a law professor, I studied why working families go broke.

These aren’t people who were running up their credit cards at the mall. About half of the people had filed for bankruptcy after a medical problem — and about three-quarters of them had health insurance.

The Affordable Care Act helped put a stop to junk insurance plans that made insurance executives rich while working people went to bankruptcy court. We put an end to lifetime caps on coverage, and we stopped insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.

But let’s be clear: Even though the Affordable Care Act was a huge step in the right direction, we’ve got to go further.

The cost of deductibles, out-of-pocket bills, and prescription drugs are pushing people’s budgets to the breaking point — and even though the cost of insurance keeps going up, coverage isn’t getting better.

The reason is simple: money. Private insurance companies are in the money-making business. They maximize their profits by bringing in the most money possible in premiums while spending the least money possible on customers’ health care.

It’s time to make sure that every single person in this country gets the coverage they need at a price that they can afford.

We can take action right now to hold insurance companies accountable and make sure they provide quality coverage that people can actually afford to use. We can bring down the cost of prescription drugs — by importing them from Canada, negotiating prices under Medicare, and fixing the broken market for generic prescriptions.

And we can pass Medicare for All.

We can get all this done. You know why I’m so sure?

Right after Donald Trump’s inauguration, when Republicans controlled every corner of our government, I thought they would repeal health care right away, in the first week.

But we stopped them.

Every person who showed up to a rally, protest, or town hall. Every person who made calls and sent emails. Every person who signed a petition or shared a story on Facebook and Twitter.

We proved that when people can stand up to even the most powerful interests and fight — we can win.

Grassroots organizing is how we’ll make sure everyone can afford high-quality health care. I’ll keep fighting, but I can’t do it alone — will you add your name right now to say you agree that health care is a basic human right?

Thanks for being a part of this,
