Sierra Club California Endorses Betty Yee for Re-election as California Controller

Sacramento — Sierra Club California endorsed Betty Yee for re-election as California Controller.  As Controller, Yee serves as the chief fiscal officer for California, which is the sixth largest economy in the world.  Yee is responsible for safeguarding our finances and the accountability and disbursement of the state’s resources.  She also serves on 70 boards and commissions including the State Lands Commission that manages our state public lands.

In her first term, Yee, among other things, led the State Lands Commission (SLC) to shutter Platform Holly off of the Santa Barbara County Coast, the first off-shore platform to be decommissioned in 30 years; secure dedicated funding to properly abandon leaking offshore oil wells; close the last coastal sand mine operation in the United States; address air quality in communities affected by port operations; and protect public access to our beaches.

Sierra Club California Director Kathryn Phillips stated, “The policy reach of the Controller’s Office is vast, and Betty Yee has significantly led the intersectional, stakeholder-driven work on climate policy in her capacity serving on the State Lands Commission, the boards of CalPERS and CalSTRS, and numerous financing authorities.”

“I am proud Sierra Club California is standing with me in my re-election for State Controller,” Yee said.  “Together with the leading advocacy of Sierra Club California, I look forward to continuing our urgent work to sustain our environment through sound energy and water policies, coastal protection, natural resources preservation, and wildlife and wildlife habitat conservation.”

Yee has served as Controller since January 2015, following two terms on the State Board of Equalization.  Her work on the boards of CalPERS and CalSTRS, the largest public pension funds in the United States, has received national and international recognition as it relates to integrating environmental considerations in investment decisions and insisting on climate competency on corporate boards.

Sierra Club California is the legislative and regulatory advocacy arm of the 13 Sierra Club chapters in California, representing more than 400,000 members and supporters statewide.
