Chair’s Comments: Where’s Nunes?

March 31, 2017

The Fresno County Democratic Party calls on Rep. Devin Nunes to step down as chair of the House Intelligence Committee until such time as his unethical actions relative to sharing sensitive committee information with the White House can be appropriately investigated.

Rep. Nunes is a classic example of the Peter Principle. Heretofore an undistinguished backbencher in Congress, he now has been given a prominent position on an important and high-profile committee. And he is proving that he simply isn’t up to the task.

The constituents of Congressional District 22, myself included, need Rep. Nunes to focus on our Congressional district. We have many real problems that need to be addressed, and these concerns should not be held hostage to Rep. Nunes’ attempts to win favor with the President. His attention should be on the following:

  • Improving our air and water quality
  • Leading the effort on comprehensive immigration reform
  • Securing federal funds for high-speed rail
  • Bringing economic development to the area through such initiatives as clean energy

Before his recent snafu and subsequent apology, Rep. Nunes was a relative unknown, even to people in his own district. His problematic behavior as a committee chair and his lack of responsiveness to the needs of his constituents have now been exposed for all to see.

We call on Rep. Nunes to hold a series of town halls to meet with his constituents and learn about their concerns. We suggest that his time in Congress would be most beneficial to residents of Congressional District 22 if he chose to represent our district rather than a radicalized partisan agenda. We need a leader, not an embarrassment.
