DNC Member Communication: Civil rights is the unfinished business of America

No person of character and common sense can watch the video footage of what police did to George Floyd without being horrified. There are no words to sufficiently capture the pain so many people are feeling right now. But here’s what I do know: Civil rights is the unfinished business of America, and it’s all our responsibility to see that work to completion.

We’ve no doubt made progress, but if there’s anything the events of the past couple weeks have laid bare it’s that we have so much more work to do. From George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, to Breonna Taylor’s death in Louisville, to Ahmaud Arbery’s death near Brunswick, Georgia, everything we’ve seen serves as a sobering reminder of the violence Black men and women face every day in America — and just how far we have to go to root out the poison of racism that pervades every facet of our society.

And yet, this president has done nothing to heal the wounds that have been so vividly exposed. Rather than condemn the racist violence that launched these protests, Trump has sown division and incited violence by threatening the protesters.

More than 100,000 are dead, 40 million newly out of work, and the country is on fire. Americans are crying out for leadership and reform. Instead of providing it, Trump is fanning the flames and retreating into the White House.

This work is not easy, but I’ve seen it done. As head of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, I worked to investigate police misconduct and hold police departments accountable to the communities they serve.

I’ve seen countless heroes step up in tragedies like this. I know there’s reason for hope and there’s reason to press on.

We will continue to honor the lives of those we have lost. And we will keep seeking justice for all the families that go through these tragedies by fighting to end police brutality and the institutional racism that pervades every aspect of our society. So long as Black men and women cannot breathe, we cannot rest.

In unity,

Tom

George Floyd

George Floyd

What’s happening in this country — in Minnesota, and right here in California — is an unspeakable tragedy and an epic failure of our justice system.

The California Democratic Party unequivocally denounces the racist violence inflicted upon Black Americans each and every day. We must speak out to demand true justice — not just for George Floyd — but for all those taken too soon at the hands of racial violence and police brutality.

Unfortunately, we are well beyond the point of thoughtful prayers, profound tweets, or hopeful messages.

We must act. Not later. But now.

It begins in our homes and in our communities. To counter systemic racism, we must start having conversations about race at the dinner table, tangibly supporting black creators, artists, and activists, and contributing to groups doing necessary work on the ground like Black Lives Matter, NAACP, and Color of Change, to name just a few.

The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others must prompt us to stand up, speak out, and eradicate the systemic violence, murder, and hate that continues to target Black Americans.

Until then, we fall woefully short of our highest collective calling — to ensure “liberty and justice for all.”

The California Democratic Party is committed to ending the deep-seeded racism and brutal violence perpetrated against Black women and men each and every day. As long as they cannot breathe, we cannot and will not rest.

In solidarity,

Rusty

NY Times: Trump’s budget would cut affordable housing efforts, food stamps, Medicaid

NY Times: Trump’s budget would cut affordable housing efforts, food stamps, Medicaid

The Trump administration released its new budget proposal today, and it’s as disastrous as you might imagine:

New York Times:

[Trump’s budget proposal] includes a familiar list of deep cuts to student loan assistance, affordable housing efforts, food stamps and Medicaid…”

Just days after promising to fight for American families during his State of the Union address, President Trump has now put forward a plan that cuts vital programs that tens of millions of hardworking Americans rely on… All while trying to increase funding for his border wall by $2 billion.

In California, we’re not having it. We’re fighting to expand healthcare, protect seniors, and empower working families.

We must challenge President Trump’s failed priorities. Help us send a strong message about this disastrous proposal today:
