‘We are on the move’ – Bee republishes MLK editorial

From the Jan. 18, 2016, edition of the Fresno Bee:

By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Editor’s note: This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery, Ala., March for Voting Rights. This is an excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech at the conclusion of the march. We reprint this in observance of Dr. King’s birthday.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave Negroes some part of their rightful dignity, but without the vote it was dignity without strength.

Once more the method of nonviolent resistance was unsheathed from its scabbard, and once again an entire community was mobilized to confront the adversary. … There never was a moment in American history more honorable and more inspiring than the pilgrimage of clergymen and laymen of every race and faith pouring into Selma to face danger at the side of its embattled Negroes. …

Today I want to tell the city of Selma, today I want to say to the state of Alabama, today I want to say to the people of America and the nations of the world, that we are not about to turn around. We are on the move now.

Evans: President Obama’s final State of the Union address was ‘phenomenal’

Enjoy President Obama’s final State of the Union Address. His outstanding comments remind us of the visionary we elected in 2008. The President makes the Democratic Party sound better when he toots his own horn and that of his administration. And his push for a unifying future and a call to achieve such critical goals as curing cancer are essential to moving our country forward. Kudos.

Next year, we will face perhaps the most critical election in our nation’s history. Not since the election of 1860 has the future of our country seen as much as at stake as will be on the line next year. And we have two clear and radically different visions – rhetoric driven by fear and the absence of facts versus rational solutions to right our nation and address the many issues before us.

Perhaps the most critical element to this analysis is the Supreme Court. If you discount everything else, the fact that the next president of the United States will likely control the ideology of the Supreme Court for a generation makes this election of the utmost importance.

We need leadership that brings to the table common sense, strong principles, a firm grasp of both domestic and international policy, and a vision for an America that works for everyone.

Your local Democratic Party is committed to a better America, a better California and a better Fresno County.
