Dear resident, 

Our office has partnered with United Health Centers to provide no cost COVID-19 testing in District 1. As the total number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise at significant levels, it is extemely important that our community get tested, take the necessary precautions, and minimize the number of continued infections.

Three events have been scheduled in District 1:

Josh Harder is the Democratic Representative in CA10

Josh and his wife, Pam, live in Turlock, where Josh grew up and delivered newspapers for the Turlock Journal. Josh is currently serving his first term in Congress on behalf of families in the Central Valley where he’s fighting to protect our access to health care, create good-paying jobs, and reform our broken immigration system. Phil Arballo is the Democratic Nominee in CA22

Growing up in Fresno, Phil learned the Central Valley values of sacrifice, hard work, and commitment from a young age.

He was raised by his single mother who worked long hours to make sure her children had the opportunity to get ahead. He was the first in his family to attend college, working minimum wage jobs to pay his own way through Fresno State.

Today, Phil runs his own small business in financial services. He’s a fixture in the local civic community through organizations like the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of Fresno’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. He’s always willing to go the extra mile for his community.

Kim Mangone is the Democratic Nominee in CA23

Kim’s life experiences include being a USAF Veteran, an aircraft mechanic, a systems engineer and a single working mom. While working full time, she went to college and earned my bachelor’s degree in Professional Aeronautics.

Kim Mangone time spent as a systems engineer has provided me with the skills I need to not only identify but to find solutions to the problems and challenges in our district.

An examination of the U.S. prison system looks at how the U.S. history of racial inequality drives the high rate of incarceration in America. This piercing, Oscar-nominated film won Best Documentary at the Emmys, the BAFTAs and the NAACP Image Awards.
The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

The Supreme Court announced groundbreaking decisions to protect LGBTQ people from employment discrimination, preserve California’s sanctuary state law, and uphold Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) for hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the U.S.—all while people across the country continue to march in support of Black Lives Matter and demand systemic change, including through yesterday’s powerful actions commemorating Juneteenth. Read AFSC’s statement on DACA.

Central Valley Partnership,

Together with sponsoring and supporting organizations, we are hosting a candidate training workshop. 

(Our co-sponsoring organizations include the Dolores Huerta Foundation, FMKT Central Labor Council, Sierra Club-Tehipite Chapter & Valley Voices.)

 

Titled Represent! – A Non-Partisan Beginners Guide To Running For Local Office, the program has three parts:

  • A series of inspiring videos featuring advice from recently elected representatives from the valley
  • An accessible, practical handbook detailing a ten-point framework covering: campaign strategy, candidate assessment, building your team, candidate development, finance, fundraising, field, marketing, campaign support, and governing.
  • A webinar offering the expertise of local representatives, community leaders and campaign consultants.

The training is free to the public and its materials are open-source.

 

The webinar is scheduled for next Thursday, July 9th starting at 5:30pm.

The entire training is to prepare people to run for local office. Its information will be useful to anyone wanting to more effectively engage in the political process, and can also be seen as a hands-on civic engagement practicum. 

 

Please share this important opportunity. All ages are welcome – if you know young adults who are politically savvy, natural leaders or just care about our communities, have them sign up or watch with you as a family.

 

We are honored to have Dezie Woods-Jones, the founder and statewide president of Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) open our July 9th webinar, followed by a panel of African American women who will share their experiences, perspectives and wisdom as elected leaders. Additional panels and speakers will offer advice on campaigns, youth engagement, financial reporting and other topics.
