Yesterday, the Supreme Court decided to uphold the President’s discriminatory Muslim travel ban and weaponized the first amendment against a woman’s right to choose.
Today, after a decision attempting to dramatically weaken public sector unions, Justice Kennedy, a critical swing vote on upholding gay rights and abortion rights, announced his retirement.
This news is a gut punch to our values, and it is the direct result of one lost election. We can’t make the same mistake twice.

The Fresno Bee: “High Court Decision Upholds ‘Un-American’ Travel Ban”
This is heart-wrenching.
The Supreme Court just voted to uphold Trump’s disgraceful travel ban.
This policy is an affront to our American values of compassion, empathy, and generosity.
It’s clear that this Administration has no sympathy for anyone who’s brown, black or a Muslim. What’s worse is a complicit Congress with no spine to stand up to hateful rhetoric and policies meant to demean and degrade immigrants.
As a first-generation son of Chinese and Filipino immigrants, I understand, firsthand, the vital role that immigrants from all nations play in our country.
There’s no sugarcoating it: Elections have consequences, and unless we take back the House majority, we’ll continue to face policies that are destructive to our American values. It’s clear, the Republicans are too scared of Trump to stick up for what we know is right.

The conservative majority on Supreme Court has paved the way for massive voter purges and given the green light for right-wing legislatures to continue gerrymandering districts.
Our Protect The Vote Project is charging forward to elect Democrats and fight back against voter suppression. On Saturday, we face our first end-of-quarter deadline since the start of our project.
We must show that we have the strength to elect Democrats in November. If we fall short we could lose races in key states and let Republicans keep control. We can’t let that happen.
Your membership activation is critical to our success. We need to have a strong showing for our end-of-quarter fundraising goal. Falling short means not having the resources to help Democrats in states where Republicans are tearing voting rights to shreds.

Dear Friend,
In my 20 years as a social worker, I worked with many children whose emotional development and ability to learn were impacted by the trauma they had experienced in their young lives. A child who is separated from their parent for any length of time can have difficulty feeling safe, focusing on school work, and otherwise thriving.
We must not let this moment of national outrage pass without addressing the systems that are needed to support these children and the many, many children in the United States who have been separated from their parents either by deportation, incarceration, or any reason.
My years of experience working with foster youth and in detention centers have always influenced my policy priorities for education, mental health, and wraparound social services. If you read my plan for California’s public education system as Superintendent of Public Instruction, you’ll read about increasing counseling services, investing in full service community schools, and combatting the effects of poverty and incarceration on students.
These are the issues that every candidate in 2018 should be running on, and it’s up to us to demand that. I’m grateful for your support for my campaign, and also for your efforts to elect candidates, from your representatives in Congress to your local school board members, who put children’s wellbeing first.

HERNANDEZ SCORES CRITICAL CANDIDATE DISTINCTION FROM INFLUENTIAL GUN SAFETY ORG Senator Ed Hernandez Receives the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America Candidate Distinction in Lieutenant Governor’s Race
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Reflecting his commitment to curbing senseless gun violence and promoting responsible gun ownership, today State Senator Ed Hernandez received the recognition of candidate distinction from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America in his campaign to become California’s next Lieutenant Governor.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state of the country and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Everytown Survivor Network, is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with more than four million supporters.
In a letter sent to Hernandez’s campaign, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, wrote:
“We are happy to inform you [Dr. Ed Hernandez] that your campaign has been given the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. Thank you again for standing up for gun violence prevention and recognizing gun safety… You stand for common sense gun safety. Thank you for standing with us against gun violence. Together, we look forward to showing that Gun Sense is a winning issue and gun safety is non-negotiable.”
Earlier this month, Hernandez’s campaign to become the next Lieutenant Governor of California advanced to the November general election.
Recently, Senator Hernandez released his new television commercial, titled “Vision of Progress.” The ad highlights Senator Hernandez’s legislative accomplishments ranging from environmental protection laws to advancing healthcare for all and cracking down on the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs.
Significantly, recently California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’s groundbreaking drug transparency bill, SB-17, into law. Senator Hernandez’s latest digital video ad, titled, “Life or Death,” features a moving testimonial from Kendall Renee, who is allergic to more than 95% of foods and carries at least four EpiPens with her at all times. Renee highlights Senator Hernandez’ efforts to combat skyrocketing drug costs in the ad.
A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities. As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.
Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.

Friends –
Just this morning, I was proud to earn the support from one of my primary opponents, Pat Harris, for my candidacy to the United States Senate.
“In these perilous times, it’s clearer than ever that what passes for leadership in Washington is not cutting it for everyday Californians,” Pat said. “We’ve got to unite behind a leader who will actually fight for working families, and not kowtow to corporate interests. Throughout the campaign, I was especially impressed with Kevin’s compassion and dedication to help immigrants and their families. That’s why I’m urging the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party to vote for Kevin de León at the upcoming July E-Board Meeting in Oakland.”
I watched Pat Harris run a principled, progressive Senate campaign. He recognized that Californians of all stripes are calling for a change-up in Washington. Pat and I agree that, united behind a clear vision and unwavering leadership, we can create a more fair and just country while etching our progressive ideals into law.
For a stronger, more progressive California, visit kevindeleon.com/cdp and let me know if I can count on your vote at the upcoming July Executive Board meeting in Oakland.
