Subject: Sign-up for Saturday Action: “Day of Divestment from DAPL”

Hi Everyone,
I have attached a sample sign-up with some (not all) of the participants’ names on it. To participate at the action on Saturday, March 18th, in front of one of the Wells Fargo Bank branches, please scroll down to the bottom of the attachment and click on the link.

We would like two people per branch, because we will be: 1) Passing out fliers, 2) Asking customers and non-customers to sign onto a petition asking Wells Fargo to divest from the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) 3) And we will supply customers with a sample letter to explain to the bank why they are ending their accounts. Packets of these materials will be given out at our FAF meeting on Thursday, to those who participate in this action. If you can’t come to the meeting, please contact me so I can deliver the materials to you.

Here are the details of our “Day of Divestment”:

Reminder of events this week and next

Friday, March 17, CSUF CineCulture and WILPF will present RiverBlue at 5:30 p.m., in honor of World Water Day, March 22. Ever wonder what things were used to make those fashion jeans you love to wear? The shocking truth is that, through harsh chemical manufacturing process and irresponsible disposal of toxic chemical wastes, jeans and leather fashion purses have probably contributed to the destruction of major world rivers and impacted the lives of people who count on these waterways for their survival. Hopefully, the film will act as a catalyst for us to demand significant change in the textile industry. Buying sustainable clothing sends a strong message to its manufacturers.
CineCulture films are screened in the CSUF Peters Ed Center Auditorium, next to Save Mart Center in the Student Recreation Center Building. Free parking after 4 P.M. Friday.

Monday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Fresno Center for Nonviolence, 1584 N. Van Ness (SE corner of Van Ness and McKinley) The film FALL AND WINTER directed and co-produced by Matt Anderson. This film is an epic and spectacularly photographed journey across the U.S. in search of what is causing our unfolding global crisis. Pollution, droughts and diminishing resources now threaten the very engine driving these catastrophes: civilization itself. Massive dislocations are manifesting in our lifetime, and our world will never be the same.

This is not a story of despair but rather a rallying effort to find our way back towards harmony with nature. FALL AND WINTER uncovers ingenious new strategies for the future while drawing on past wisdom; it is a survival guide for the 21st century. Director and co-producer: Matt Anderson. Cast includes: Grace Lee Boggs, Michael Parenti, Ed Narango, Marilyn Woodhouse, John Zersan and many others. Film is free and open to the public; wheelchair accessible. For more information call our Center at (559) 237-3223 Mon-Fri 11-3.

Healthcare-NOW!

The prospect of millions of people losing their access to healthcare has loomed since Trump’s election; earlier this morning, the critical House Ways and Means Committee pushed that scenario closer to reality by approving the regressive American Health Care Act, a bill that has a viable path to passage through both chambers of Congress.

Take Action: Email your representative now and tell them to vote NO on the ACHA and YES on single payer!

The bill in a nutshell
Mostly what the AHCA does is massively redistribute wealth from the poorest to the richest by giving a tax break to the 1%, as well as insurers, pharma, and medical-device manufacturers. These taxes are essential for keeping Medicare afloat.

The AHCA repeals the ACA’s Medicaid expansion – which extended insurance coverage to 11 million new people – and eliminates subsidies for 9 million additional people. It also:

  • ends copayment and deductible support for low income people
  • repeals subsidies for small employers
  • bans federal funding for Planned Parenthood
  • imposes a 30% premium hike on people who have been uninsured for 2 months who are seeking coverage

In the place of income-based subsidies, the AHCA would provide regressive age-based tax credits that would mean a 50-year old earning $70,000 would receive the same assistance as a 50-year old earning nothing. While the credits do increase with age, the bill also allows insurers to more easily discriminate based on age, which means that older patients would overall be much worse off.

TODAY’S ACTION

Speak up! Email your representative now and tell them to vote NO on the ACHA and YES on single payer!

This is just the beginning of our fightback campaign – more to come tomorrow!

Yours in solidarity,
Ben and Stephanie
