Fresno City Council Votes No on Anti-Panhandling Bill
 
An anti-panhandling bill was introduced at Fresno City Council last week. The bill was the brainchild of outgoing City Council Member Steve Brandau and was co-sponsored by Paul Caprigolio and Luis Chavez (both Democrats). The bill would have penalized residents who transferred money or any item to panhandlers at designated stop signs.
                News of the bill galvanized the community, which showed up in large number to speak against the proposed bill. Community members such as the chair of the Fresno County Democratic Party spoke against the bill and criticized the two Democrats who co-sponsored the bill. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer also spoke against the bill claiming that it was an unpractical use of police resources.
                Earlier, Council Members Esmeralda Soria, Nelson Esparza and Miguel Arias (all Democrats) held a press conference where they voiced their opposition to this legislation. The mayor, Lee Brand, also hinted that he would veto such bill.
                Due to the overwhelming public outcry, the bill was defeated 3-2 with Chavez abstaining (Esparza was absent).

Thank you for all of your hard work this election season – and congratulations on the incredible Blue Wave that we pulled off. We not only took back the House – in no small part because of the outstanding work we did to flip seats here in California – but we also saw an encouraging trend of progressive victories throughout the state and the country.

 

From electing Josh Harder in Congressional District 10 to electing Democrats to every single state constitutional office, we had an amazing showing. Now it’s time to continue the energy and success that we had in this election – and you can start by attending the Assembly District Election Meetings! 

ADEMS are being held the weekend of Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, January 13, 2019 and Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27, 2019, click here to apply, find the date, time and location, and a list of candidates for your AD election.  We have all had something to celebrate because Democrats swept California on November the 6th! Now the California Democratic Party must proceed with our reorganization, which occurs biennially to determine its members of the Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC). These Delegates will meet for the first time at the California Democratic Party State Convention held May 31 – June 2, 2019 in San Francisco.

The 2019-2021 term for these Delegates promises to be an eventful one. California has many issues facing us including the budget, possible special elections and the 2020 presidential election.
