ASM. BLOOM BACKS SENATOR HERNANDEZ FOR LT. GOVERNOR

Assembly Member Richard Bloom Endorses State Senator Ed Hernandez in his Statewide Race

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA- Continuing to build up his roster of support among some of California’s most widely respected leaders in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez was endorsed by State Assemblymember Richard Bloom. Bloom represents the 50th Assembly District, which encompasses West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Agoura Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, and other surrounding communities.

In a statement released following the announcement, Bloom declared:

“Senator Ed Hernandez has shown great courage throughout his career, but particularly when it comes to healthcare policy. He’s taken on Big Pharma to lower prescription drug prices and Big Tobacco to raise California’s smoking age to 21, and he’s dedicated his career to increasing access to care. We need Ed’s effectiveness and his fierce commitment  to advancing smart, forward-thinking policies fighting on behalf of all Californians. I’m proud to endorse Ed Hernandez for Lt. Governor.”

Recently, State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez rolled out a new digital video ad, titled “Proven Progressive,” in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor. The ad highlights some of the Senator’s high-powered endorsements, including from the California Nurses Association and the California Teachers Association, along with his 100% legislative voting scorecard from organizations like the California Labor Federation* and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California Advocates*.

The script of the spot reads as follows:

Ed Hernandez:

A proven progressive.

He’s endorsed by the California Nurses Association because, “he’s led on healthcare issues,” including “single-payer.”

Planned Parenthood and California’s Labor Federation gave him a 100% scorecard.

And the California Teachers Association said he’s “our choice.”

As Senator, Hernandez took on Big Oil, Wall Street banks and Big Pharma.

He fought for tougher environmental laws, consumer protections, lower drug prices and livable wages for working families.

Ed Hernandez: A Proven Progressive.

Beyond endorsements highlighted in the video, “Proven Progressive,” Hernandez has earned widespread support from organizations that represent working families, including from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California State Council, the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California and over 60 labor unions overall. He’s also collected wide-ranging support from grassroots activists and more.
Significantly, recently California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ groundbreaking drug transparency bill, SB-17, into law.  Senator Hernandez’ latest digital video ad, titled, “Life or Death,” features a moving testimonial from Kendall Renee, who is allergic to more than 95% of foods and carries at least four EpiPens with her at all times. Renee highlights Senator Hernandez’ efforts to combat skyrocketing drug costs in the ad.

Beyond today’s announcement, Senator Dr. Hernandez’ campaign has released an expansive list of over 500 endorsements from grassroots activists, community leaders, federal, state and local elected officials, public safety groups and over 60 organizations that represent working families.

A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities.  As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.

Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.
