Like many of you, I was saddened and horrified by the string of mass shootings that occurred across the United States over the last week. First in Gilroy, California then in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.
But that sadness quickly turned into anger. After each of these mass shootings, we’re reminded again and again that Republican leaders in Washington have been compromised by special interests and have no real interest in addressing this issue.
In the House, we passed bipartisan gun safety legislation that would require universal background checks on all gun sales and transfers — that’s it. We’re not taking any damn guns away, and this is a bill that 90% of the American people are asking for. But Mitch McConnell still won’t allow a vote in the Senate because he is — to be frank — a terrible person.
I know the inaction is incredibly frustrating to see. I’m frustrated, too. But I want to do something about it and you should join me by taking these small actions that will make an important impact:
1.) Call your Senator, or better yet, call Mitch McConnell’s office and demand that he head back to Washington to vote on the common sense gun bills we’ve already passed and the majority of Americans want.
Call your Senator: (202) 224-3121
Call Mitch McConnell’s office: (202) 224-2541
2.) Consider making a contribution to Giffords PAC — a group founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords that has worked tirelessly to enact gun safety legislation to save lives and keep our communities safe. They need our support now more than ever.
3.) Sign this petition that my team is distributing nationally calling on the Senate to end the August recess early, return to Washington DC, and vote on our universal background checks legislation. We cannot wait any longer.
All my very best,
TJ
