This Month in Washington: State of the Union, Judicial Nominee Hearing, Legislation Impacting Californians

Though 2019 has only just begun, I’ve been hard at work for California and the American people.

Earlier this week, it was my pleasure to invite Trisha Pesiri-Dybvik, a government worker who had been furloughed during the government shutdown as my guest to this year’s State of the Union. And I questioned Neomi Rao, the nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., during a hearing in the Judiciary Committee.

This month I also introduced legislation that strengthens critical protections for farm workers, to defend our immigrant communities, and preserves our state’s natural beauty and public lands.

Let’s continue to fight for the best of who we are and all that California represents.

State of the Union 2019

This year, Senator Kamala Harris’ guest to the 2019 State of the Union address was Trisha Pesiri-Dybvik, an air traffic control specialist who lost her home in the 2017 Thomas Fire and who was furloughed throughout the 35-day-long government shutdown. Trisha’s husband, Jed, is a Navy veteran and air traffic controller with close to 25 years of experience who worked without pay throughout the shutdown.

and avoid another harmful shutdown.

In advance of President Trump’s 2019 State of the Union address, Senator Harris delivered remarks in which she rejected the president’s attempts to drive Americans apart and instead offered a vision for the country based in speaking truth and recognizing that every American is united in service of a common, higher purpose.

At a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, Senator Harris questioned Neomi Rao, nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., on her previous comments blaming survivors of sexual assault for the trauma they experienced, as well as her controversial writings on sexual assault and consent.

This month, Senator Harris and her colleagues have been working hard to introduce a variety of critical legislation that impacts all Californians. Here’s some of what the Senator has been up to in the fight for justice and equity:
