Senator Dianne Feinstein has not come out unequivocally against Trump’s new pick to lead the CIA, Gina Haspel, who led torture operations under George W Bush. Please take action now >>
Trump’s new pick to lead the CIA — coming after firing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replacing him with CIA director Mike Pompeo — is Deputy CIA Director Gina Haspel.
It sounds normal, but here’s why it’s not:
According to CNN, “Haspel oversaw the torture of two terrorism suspects and her name was on a cable giving instructions to destroy video evidence documenting their interrogations.”
The American Civil Liberties Union has said Haspel was “up to her eyeballs in torture.”
Unfortunately, Senator Dianne Feinstein is on the record saying she believes Haspel has been a “good” deputy CIA Director.
Here’s where I stand:
The US Senate should not equivocate on rejecting Trump’s pro-torture CIA nominee.
Having released a torture report, Senator Feinstein knows better than most how morally and legally wrong torture is. This should be an easy call.
Not only should she be a NO vote on Trump’s CIA pick, she should also be a leading voice rallying all Democrats against this nomination.
I would vote no on confirming Gina Haspel if elected to represent California in the U.S. Senate. Our country’s unfortunate history with torture must be condemned in the strongest terms possible, not washed with apologies of “following orders.”
We can’t stand for this, and if we work together, we won’t have to.
