Team, in a few moments, I’m going to ask you to chip in to my campaign for president.

But first, let’s take a step back. I know you get a lot of these kinds of emails — and you deserve to know why your donation truly matters to our campaign, especially right now.

The truth is, at the end of this month, we turn the corner into a new phase of this election. The first debates are in June, and that will be the first chance for an underdog campaign like ours to stand out in the crowd of 23 candidates.

That means this moment is our last chance to build this operation before we put it to the test on the national stage. We have plans to open new offices, hire dozens of organizers and interns (yes, we pay our interns!), and lay the groundwork for what comes next.

I know fully well that other campaigns have it easier than we do. The focus is on the frontrunners in this race who are raking in millions of dollars, thanks in part to the attention they get. They’ll have all the money they need to compete.

We don’t have that guarantee. We haven’t spent years building an online donor base. And from the start, our campaign has refused corporate PAC money and donations from D.C. lobbyists. Because if you want to govern the right way, you’ve got to campaign the right way, too.

That’s why these monthly fundraising deadlines mean a whole lot more to me than they do to many others in this field. We rely on people like you to give us a fighting chance.

I can’t tell you how much it means to see people who believe enough in me and what we’re building to chip in right now — at a moment when the spotlight has yet to shine on us.

But I believe that, with your help, that spotlight will find us. We’ll make the most of the June debates and the important organizing work on the ground.
