Dear Friend —
This week the California State Senate is taking historic steps to build the clean energy future and protect our environment from Donald Trump’s pro-polluter agenda.
Yesterday we passed the Preserve California legislative package which protects public health, public lands, and scientific integrity in our state.
- Senate Bill 49 ensures that no matter what the President and Republicans in Congress do, California won’t lose the protections of landmark federal environmental laws like the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
- Senate Bill 50 protects California’s precious public lands and natural resources from being sold off to be exploited by oil companies and other polluters.
- Senate Bill 51 ensures that California continues to make public policy based on the best available science, not ‘alternative facts’ or polluter propaganda.
Together, these measures safeguard the people, places and wildlife we love from the reckless and short-sighted special interests that currently dominate in Washington.
But we’re not stopping there. Today, we’re taking the next big step in California’s climate leadership. In a few hours, the Senate will vote on my bill, Senate Bill 100, which puts California on the path to 100% clean, renewable energy.
WATCH THE FLOOR VOTE LIVE TODAY
SB 100 will completely eliminate fracking and fossil fuels in our electricity grid by 2045. It’s the most ambitious target in the world — especially for an economy that dwarfs all but a handful of nations — but I know California is up to the challenge.
By following the science and taking common sense steps to protect consumers, wildlife and public health, we’ve turned some of our biggest environmental challenges into economic opportunities. Clean energy is now a pillar of our economy that employs over half a million Californians — nearly ten times the number of coal mining jobs in the entire nation. That’s why Donald Trump’s fossil-fuel fetish isn’t just environmentally out-of-touch; it’s economically out-of-whack. California is winning the future while Trump and Pruitt dig in the dirt to please their polluter friends.
Join California Democrats in sending a message to Donald Trump — we won’t go backward on clean air, clean water, or clean energy.
Thank you and God Bless the California Dream.
Kevin de León
