As Councilmember Miguel Arias said, Mayor Lee Brand’s refusal to appoint a new police chief shows a lack of leadership — and even further, a lack of care for the people of Fresno.
A police chief is responsible for countless important things — dealing with crime, fixing delayed response times to 911 calls, and monitoring excessive use of force by officers.
These are not small tasks, and the community should have a say in who is entrusted with this responsibility.
Mayor Brand has failed to execute this process in the way it should work. That’s why it’s never been more crucial to have someone like Andrew in office, who will be transparent and compassionate when making important choices. When Fresno found out the police chief was retiring, the community gave feedback and attended meetings, hoping to influence the process with their own experiences and priorities for the community.
It’s now becoming clear that they’re being ignored — the lack of transparency from the Mayor’s office throughout the process has been extremely telling.
Our community deserves better. They deserve a say in how the community is policed, and they deserve respect from the officers in the community.
