There are quite a few horrific details in the budget Donald Trump proposed this week. His disastrous plan calls to gut funding for programs that help hardworking people and instead line the pockets of the wealthy.
The startling reality is Trump’s proposed budget would undermine initiatives serving the most vulnerable, leave children hungry or in poverty, and do an insurmountable harm to millions of American families.
It’s abundantly clear that the only way we can stop these incessant attacks on workers, families, seniors, and the most vulnerable among us is by sending Donald Trump and Republicans packing in 2020. And that all starts with electing Democrats from the halls of Congress to the Oval Office. So I am coming to you with an urgent request:
There are very real and detrimental consequences if Trump’s proposed budget becomes a reality and any amount you give will go directly toward taking back the White House and seats across the country.
There’s an old adage that says a budget is a moral document that directly reflects the values of a leader — if that’s the case then Donald Trump’s proposed budget is morally bankrupt. It’s sickening that his administration expects anyone to take this budget seriously, especially when it breaks one of his biggest campaign promises: That there would be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Yet, the truth reared its ugly head and his plan now includes a $25 billion cut to Social Security programs, an $845 billion cut to Medicare, and a whopping $1.5 trillion cut to Medicaid — a program that more than 60 million Americans rely on every day, Michael. It’s no coincidence that Republicans in Congress just passed a massive tax break for almost the same price, exposing their age-old playbook: Irresponsibly gut critical safety net programs while giving massive tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, including himself.
We simply cannot endure another four years of Trump’s reckless agenda. At a time when our country desperately needs bold ideas that will move us forward, we’re getting Republican policies that are setting us back. We need to build an economy that works for everyone; we need to guarantee health care as a right for us all; and we need to work toward an America that lives up to our values and creates opportunities for everyone to thrive.
Make no mistake: This budget is a direct assault on working Americans and paints a pretty clear picture of what (and whom) Trump values, which is why we must be using everything in our arsenal to send a Democrat to the White House and make sure he is nothing more than a one-term president.
