The Census is on the line at the Supreme Court today

My tie was thicker. My suit was cut wider. My hair was a bit darker. But in the spring of 1999, my core message about the Census was the same: 

During a speech on the House floor in the spring of ’99, I told my Republican colleagues they were “tinkering with the Census in ways we don’t need to.” Back then, I was standing up against a GOP bill that would have undercounted our communities. 


I fought for a fair Census in ’99. I’m fighting for one now — and the Supreme Court just heard arguments about the Census today. Chip in $5 to help keep up the fight.

I wasn’t expecting that 20 years later, almost to the day, I would be standing again to protect the Census from a much larger Republican attack: the citizenship question. 


Today, New York was before the Supreme Court to block President Trump from including a citizenship question in the 2020 Census. 

We filed legal documents in support of this lawsuit, while our own case works its way through the courts. If New York secures a victory, the Court will send a strong message to the country: all people count. 

That message could impact California most, where even our number of seats in the House of Representatives are on the line.

I’ve been working for a fair Census since my first years in Congress. The stakes and rhetoric are so much higher now, but my message today is the same: instead of tinkering with the Census, we should count everyone. 


Since 1790, we’ve counted every single person in the United States, citizen and non-citizen alike. Let’s make sure all people are counted in 2020.
