The science is clear: We have a short period of time to act. Whether we shrink from this challenge, or rise to it, is the single biggest question we face. Working together we can transform our economy, create a just transition, and lead the world in innovations that will drive the future!
Fighting climate change has been the driving force in my public life. As governor, we’ve enacted policies that make Washington state a national leader in clean energy, clean air, and clean water.
We created a new Clean Energy Fund, which has invested more than $100 million in developing and deploying innovative energy technologies and growing clean energy businesses and jobs. We passed the largest and greenest transportation infrastructure investment package in state history. And we started the Clean Energy Institute at the University of Washington, which is pioneering research into next-generation renewable energy technologies like solar and battery storage.
I know our country can do big things, because I’ve seen it throughout my career and throughout American history. We went to the moon, and we’ve invented the technology that has defined modern society. We as Americans have an entrepreneurial spirit, a spirit that is the very foundation of America. Now we must carry forward that spirit and band together to defeat climate change.
Let’s commit to put American ingenuity, creativity, and hard work into an all-out effort to solve this problem — a mission that invests in innovation and technological advancement and focuses our unique problem-solving skills to defeat climate change. It is a great challenge — but I believe in Americans’ ability to do great things!
