| My father joined the U.S. Navy during the dark days of the Great Depression and served for 22 years. During World War II, over 11% of our population was in the military. This burden and sacrifice was felt by the entire country. Today, less than 1% of our population serves in the military. The burden placed on these men and women is extraordinary and too easily overlooked by those of us without family or friends in service.
Today, as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms, I want to also pay attention to those who have returned from war zones with physical and emotional scars. It is our duty to provide these individuals with proper healthcare, housing and jobs. No veteran should be sleeping on our streets or in a homeless shelter. We must do better. God bless the families whose fathers and mothers, daughters and sons, sisters and brothers, gave the ultimate sacrifice. Today, and always, we honor their memory.
