The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.
The Paris Climate Accords is a contract among nations to collaboratively reduce global warming by reducing detrimental emissions. On Monday, our president served notice that the United States, the world’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, will withdraw from the Paris Agreement. The United States of America will be the ONLY ONE of 195 countries to withdraw.
Whether your reaction is rage or just despair, I urge you to keep your eye on the ball. We do not have the luxury of throwing our hands up in the air or giving in to negative emotions. We must be focused now. We must not allow the irresonsible behavior of one administration to determine America’s future, or the world’s.
Now as always, Americans should be deeply committed to doing the right thing. As president, I will put the United States on a different road than the one that we’re now on. We need to rejoin the Paris Agreement — and more. We need a Green New Deal — and more. We need a green new century — and America should be leading the way.
We need to harness the creativity and productivity of the American people in rising to the occasion at this critical hour. As president I will appoint a world-class environmentalist to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Together, we will initiate a WW2 level mass mobilization to reverse climate change (see my policies here). From sequestering carbon to reforestation, from investing in clean energy to ending animal factory farming, from phasing down greenhouse gas emissions to banning fracking, we will in our generation rise to the occasion and lead the world in repairing the planet.
This is not just something we should do; it is something we must do. In the absence of a mass mobilization to deal with this crisis over the next 12 years, we could be facing mass social collapse between 15 and 20 years from now in the form of mass food shortages, economic collapse and hundreds of millions of climate refugees.
As president, I will not let this happen. We will invest in clean energy, create high-quality union jobs that guarantee wage and benefit parity for workers affected by the transition from fossil fuel to clean energy companies, and save our planet for generations who we will never even see.
It’s time to begin a new chapter in American history, involving more than incremental or even just policy change. We will win the election next year, and the future of our country, by daring to reach for it all. Nothing less than that will inspire the imagination and energy of the American people. We’ve not been asking for too much. We’ve been asking for too little.
Join me as we prepare for an extraordinary new chapter in the history of the United States.
